San Diego State University; Zeta Chapter
GZA History
Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is a Latino interest fraternity which was founded in the fall of 1987 at California State University, Chico by fifteen young, diverse, and educated men that saw a need for an organization that would uphold brotherhood and facilitate their needs. Among those needs were the three principles that they shared in common. Those principles have become the foundation upon which this fraternity has grown upon: Academic Excellence, Community Service, and the promotion of the Latino Culture. Gamma Zeta Alpha was established for the purposes of uniting and directing all persons interested in promotion of the Latino culture and ethnic origins via community interaction and the educational system. Since then, chapters have been founded at San Jose State University, University of California at Berkeley, California State University at Northridge, California State University at Fresno, San Diego State University, University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Davis, Stanford University, and University of California at Santa Barbara and more.
Zeta Chapter History
After experiencing the various degrees of fraternal organizations at San Diego State University, a group of dedicated men decided to gather other like-minded college students to address the reality and need of a different type of fraternity on our campus. As Latinos, we notice and value the comfort and support that can only come from strong family ties. Together, this group established the campus club “Raza Unida,” as the initial step to establishing a chapter of Gamma Zeta Alpha at SDSU.
The founding fathers not only noticed, but w ere concerned about the lack of community involvement and unity among the Latino population at SDSU and San Diego in general. Gamma Zeta Alpha, with its core principals of Academics, Brotherhood, Community Service and Maintenance of the Latino Culture, proved to be the best organization to help us develop, explore and execute our ideas and beliefs.
On May 31, 1997, they earned the privilege to establish and became the founding fathers of Gamma Zeta Alpha, Zeta Chapter, San Diego State University. Since then, our fraternity has established and maintained a level of professionalism and respect that is recognized throughout California. Whether we are encouraging each other towards graduation or supporting each other afterwards, all brothers of the Zeta Chapter are proud of what we started; and we will continue to be proud, thanks to the classes that will forever maintain, develop, and surpass our goals and achievements.
Oscar A. Jimenez
Oscar Jimenez was a Zeta Chapter Brother who lost his life on April 11, 2004 performing an act of heroism, while on active duty in Iraq. We have chosen to commemorate his life and the legacy he left us by offering scholarships to deserving students who exemplify the goals of our fraternity. The members of the Zeta Chapter at San Diego State University would like to encourage graduating under-represented minority high school seniors and community college transfer students to apply for this scholarship.
